There is no greater sacrifice than serving your country through military duty. To reward active and veteran military members, many top colleges and universities throughout the United States offer tailored programs and exclusive tuition assistance. 

Students of past or present military service can enroll for online courses, studying at their own pace, and earning a degree either while they actively serve or in conjunction with other obligations.

Perimeter College at Georgia State University (Atlanta, Georgia)

Perimeter College offers associate degrees in Arts or Science, with the option to transition to over 250 bachelor degrees at Georgia State University. Here you will find their Military Outreach Center, recognized as one of the best in the country for active duty or veteran students. 

You’ll be provided with a military advocate to support and guide you through the application process, all the way to graduation. Through the Yellow Ribbon Program, eligible out-of-state students can qualify for a 50% tuition contribution, with the Department of Veteran Affairs matching this reduction. For military veterans, the Veteran Upward Bound (VUB) program offers free refresher courses and training for those with a high school diploma or GED.

University of Arizona (Tucson, Arizona)

Military members and veterans can take advantage of over 100 fully online degree programs, including bachelor degrees in business administration, communication, education and engineering. There is also a master’s degree track for accounting and business administration available. 

Through their Veterans Education and Transition Services (VETS) and Supportive Education for Returning Veterans (SERV) programs, students will receive support and tools specifically designed to transition from military duty to academic life. Your military training can be eligible for academic credits and the university is also a member of the Yellow Ribbon Program to help with out-of-state tuition costs. 

Drexel University (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

Military members or veterans can choose from bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees in over 150 programs. Fields of study include business, education, nursing, medicine, and technology. Courses are delivered through the Blackboard interface and are mostly asynchronous, allowing students to study at their own pace. Terms are 10 weeks in duration, with four enrollment openings per year. 

Benefits to military members include a one-on-one enrollment counselor and a live tutor for study and test-taking support. Academic credit may be given for your prior military training.

Financial relief is available through the Yellow Ribbon Program, where an unlimited number of veterans may qualify for a tuition-free education. Military personnel, veterans, National Guard and reservists may also be eligible for a tuition cut of between 10 to 40 percent.

Norwich University (Northfield, Vermont)

Norwich has the distinction of being the first private military college in the United States. Founded in 1918, it offers an array of online certificates, as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Choose from a bachelor’s degree in business administration, nursing, computer science or cyber security, to name a few.

There are 16 master’s degrees offered in studies such as history, accounting, nursing and civil engineering. Students can access course materials 24/7 through asynchronous learning. Military veterans can transfer up to 90 credits from prior military experience and training toward their bachelor’s degree.

A student support advisor is assigned to help guide you and agreements with various military programs expedites the review process. Norwich is a member of the Yellow Ribbon Program and also offers other tuition assistance for active duty, reserve and National Guard members.

Indiana University (Bloomington, Indiana)

Students of this university can pick from over 150 online certifications, undergrad degrees or bachelor’s degrees. Courses are taught through the Canvas online learning platform, allowing students a flexible schedule to attend classes.

Assistance is available via the Center for Veteran and Military Students, helping to understand military benefits and the associated paperwork. Students can also avail themselves of tuition assistance through the Yellow Ribbon Program and members who have children under the age of 18 may qualify for up to $2000 towards their schooling. 

Liberty University (Lynchburg, Virginia)

Liberty is a Christian university offering degrees from a biblical worldview. Programs available include bachelor programs in accounting, information technology and sports management, as well as master’s degrees in business administration, nursing or education. A doctoral track is also available for some fields of study. Along with transfer credits for military service and tuition assistance, the Service Members Opportunity Colleges Degree Network System offers extra support and guarantees serving members don’t lose school credits due to duty station changes or moves.
